Taw Pre-school Summer Term 2025

20/06/25 

This week our topic is ‘Beach’ and ‘under the sea’. We have been reading summer themed stories such as, ‘Grandma’s beach’,What the ladybird heard at the seaside’ and ‘busy beach’.   

 Activities this week at pre-school: 

  • Beach role play – The children played in our pretend ‘beach’ with real sand, buckets, spades, camping chairs, towels, sunglasses etc. They have also played with a pretend ice-cream van using lollies and ice-cream tubs.  

  • Sea themed sensory tray. The children played with salt that had been dyed blue to look like the sea. Inside the tray is different sea animals.  

  • Fishing game – The children have enjoyed playing a wooden fishing game using rods.  

  • Starfish and seahorse craft – The children decorated a seahorse or starfish using paper tissue.  

  • Sensory waterplay – the children played with two sea themed trays. They explored different sea animals, sand and shells.  

  • We read ‘Somebody swallowed Stanley’ and talked about why it’s important to recycle our rubbish and keep our beaches clean. The children separated rubbish into plastic and cardboard.  

  • Icecream oblex sensory tray – The children made pretend ice-creams using cones and scoopers.  

 

Phonics: Oral blending and segmenting  

To develop oral blending and segmenting of sounds in words.  

We will be playing games that involve asking the children to blend and segment sounds in word e.g. c-a-t or p-e-n.  

Important information: 

  • We are really excited that Story Bears will be visiting Codden and Taw classes on Thursday 3rd July am to lead an interactive story, music, play and massage sessionThe cost for this experience will be £3 per child. Please pay via Eduspot/SchoolMoney by 30th June. On this occasion this experience is only available for children who currently attend Pre-School on Thursday. 

  • Toy Sale on Thursday 26th June at 3:15-4pm to raise funds to develop a stage area for the EYFS Garden. We welcome donations of good quality toys, puzzles, games and books.  

  • We have started transition sessions for our school starters. Transition sessions will occur throughout the week, so every child has the opportunity to spend some time in Codden class with Mrs Paul, Miss Burnell and Cheryl.   

 

13/06/25 

This week our topic is ‘The King’s Birthday. We have been talking about the royal family and London. The children have listened to stories such as ‘The King’s Coronation’ and ‘We’re going to a birthday party’.     

 Activities this week at pre-school: 

  • Royal tea party role play – The pretended to have a picnic with different cakes, bread etc.  

  • Birthday cake playdough – The children made playdough cupcakes with pretend candles  

  • Baking cakesThe children made cupcakes on Monday and decorated them with blue icing  

  • Tea party snack – The children made their own sandwiches for snack on Thursday. They buttered their own bread and picked between ham and cheese for the fillings.  

  • Making bunting – The children all made a piece of bunting. We put them all together to decorate the pre-school room  

  • Maths activity – The children played a London bus themed maths game. They rolled a dice and put passengers on the bus. They practised recognising numerals 1-5 

  • Small world play – London landmarks, train track, cars and road pieces  

  • The children made Father’s Day cards to take home.

  • Making crowns using different materials  

  • We played party games such as, musical statues and musical chairs  

  • The children played with red, white and blue balloon  

  • Small world play – London landmarks, train track, cars and road pieces  

  • Finding jewels in mood sand using tweezer  

  • Sensory rice tray – blue, red and white rice

We will be playing games that involve asking the children to blend and segment sounds in word e.g. c-a-t or p-e-n.  

Important information: 

  • Please can we ask parents to bring in a named sunhat and suncream. These can be kept at pre-school if more convenient 

  • Please can we ask for children to wear t shirts/tops that cover the tops of their arms/backs to help protect them from the sun. 

  • We are now on half term for two weeks until Friday 6th June  

  • Pre-school stay and play sports day – 17th June 9am – Please email to confirm if you are planning to attend

  • After half term with will begin transition sessions for our school starters. Transition sessions will occur throughout the week, so every child has the opportunity to spend some time in codden class with Mrs Paul, Miss Burnell and Cheryl.

This week the children have continued learning about Minibeasts! We have read books such as, ‘A good place’, Superworm’ and ‘Mad about Minibeasts’.    

 Activities this week at pre-school: 

  • Painting butterflies – Painting on one side and printing it onto the other to make a mirrored effect 

  • Making minibeasts out of junk modelling materials e.g. cardboard, plastic  

  • Making a home for minibeasts using different loose parts.  

  • Tracing minibeast pictures  

  • Minibeast playdough – The children made minibeasts out of playdough using plastic ears, legs etc.  

  • Bug hotel and Minibeast cafe role play – The children played with pretend bugs and toy food  

  • Small world Minibeast play – The children made their own ‘Bug hotel’ using the dolls house and toy bugs.

This week the children have started learning about Minibeasts! We have read books such as, ‘A good place’, Superworm’ and ‘Mad about Minibeasts’.    

 Activities this week at pre-school: 

  • Making butterflies using different craft materials such as, paint, pipe cleaners, googly eyes, tissue paper.  

  • Sorting Minibeasts – Do they fly or crawl? 

  • Ladybird biscuits – decorating a biscuit using red/black icing and chocolate buttons 

  • Messy Superworm tray – The children played with kinetic sand and pretend worms  

  • Minibeast playdough – The children made minibeasts out of playdough using plastic ears, legs etc.  

  • Bug hotel and Minibeast cafe role play – The children played with pretend bugs and toy food  

  • Small world Minibeast play – The children made their own ‘Bug hotel’ using the dolls house and toy bugs.
