Lundy Spring Term 2025

28.03.25

We have planned and written a class ghost story, creating suspense and atmosphere through description over several short paragraphs.  In maths we have been problem solving using factors, multiples and prime numbers.  The Y5 children have been out on Bikeabilty and have really enjoyed this – they behaved brilliantly!  We have been continuing with our art work – just the details to add now.  Y6 children have had a ‘mock’ SATs week – they have been really focused and determined to do their best – very well done to them all!

21/3/25

This week in English, we have been investigating when to use direct speech in story writing, as well as creating cohesion between paragraphs.   Our maths lessons this week focused on finding the volume and interpreting graphs to answer questions.  In science, we have planned some state of matter investigations and have been finding out about how much salt can dissolve in 200ml of water. We have been painting on fabric with brusho to create our landscapes.

14/3/25

In maths, we have been focusing on time – problem solving and telling the time with the 12- and 24-hour clock.  We have started learning about the features of a new text – a story called ‘Art’, with ghostly goings on!   In science, we have been learning about the difference between a solution and a mixture and developing our own questions to investigate.     In music we have been improving our compositions and practicing playing in time.   We have begun working on our final piece in art – using fabric to create a landscape.

I am so impressed with how the children are trying to improve their handwriting - please have a look at the photos below.  Super presentation and super descriptive writing.

3/3/25

In maths, we have been solving 2 step word problems and revising all that we know about money.    We have written some super story openings which we have published, using our very best handwriting, to be displayed in the classroom.  We have continued learning about states of matter and have found out about reversible changes; we learnt about evaporation and condensation and drew diagrams to explain the process.   The Y6 have been doing quite a lot of SPAG revision this week, focusing on: pronouns, relative pronouns and possessive pronouns; subordinating conjunctions; formal/informal and standard English.

The children all looked amazing on World Book Day!  Well done and thank you for all of the effort involved.

PE will be on Friday next week as normal.

28.2.25

In maths, we have been converting units of measure into different units and solving problems involving this skill.  We have been writing story openings which include lots of detail for the reader about the setting and main character.   We have been composing in our music lesson – using our understanding of note values.  In science, we have been developing our understanding of solids, liquids and gases; we played with Oobleck to discover the properties it has. We also had a visit in class from an artist called Mrs Animation; she talked to the children about all the different jobs she has had, and showed some of her work.  Thank you to the Chair of the School Council Arts Committee for organising this.

World Book Day - Friday 7th March.  Wear PJ's or dress up as a book character!

Next week, PE will be on Friday as normal.

14.2.25

We have been solving problems involving decimals in maths.   We have been learning how to add greater detail to our sentences – using expanded noun phrases, independent clauses and adding commas to ensure the meaning is clear.   In art, we have been planning our final piece of artwork, which we will create after half term.  We have been playing glockenspiels in music and learning how to fit notes of different durations together into a composition based around 3 notes.  The Y5 have been out of school completing a ‘speed check’ activity with a police officer.  Well done to Y6 for running the book and cake sale - £262 was raised.  Thank you to all of you for supporting the school council.

Have a lovely half term holiday everyone!

On the first Monday back please wear your PE kit as you will be doing PE.

7.2.25

We have been learning to solve calculations with fractions – including learning KFC to help with division.   We have been investigating story openings to find out how we can include more information about character and setting for the reader.  In art, we have been practicing different stitches which we will use to add detail to our final piece of art work.   We have begun our science topic about states of matter and have been revising their properties.

For Mental Health Week, we have been learning about how to 'GROW' ourselves by setting goals, using resilience, owning our emotions and thinking about a 'Menu' of ways to improve our well-being.  These included taking 3 deep breaths, having a walk in nature, reading a book or something as simple as having  a happy thought.

Please find below the Feelings Wheel for your home learning -  you can either print it or look at it and create your own.  I look forward to seeing your creations in school next week!

31/1/25
We have had a very busy week of learning in Lundy Class - the children have worked very hard!

The Y6 children have been focusing on ratio and proportion in maths, while the Y5’s have been investigating prime numbers and prime factors.   The children have written some super individual reports about a celebration of their choice – either imaginary or real.   In art they have been creating texture by using fabric to enhance our practice collages.  We re-created the opening of Hans Zimmers ‘Earth’ composition using instruments and voices – we also learnt about the position of notes on the stave. We have been writing conclusions in science; learning to link it back to our original question and hypothesis.

24.1.25

We have been learning to find the mean in maths, as well as learning how to use scale factors with shapes and recipes.    We have written our report about birthday celebrations and have applied our learning from this English sequence very well; next week we will plan and write about celebrations of our own choosing.  In art we have re-created aspects of the quilt work by Anne Loveless, using brusho and tissue paper.  In science we have been learning to analyse investigation results and writing this up in a clear format.

17/1/25

We have been learning to solve long multiplication problems with and without decimals.  In English, we have learnt about how the author of our text – The Nameless Holiday – uses colons to begin descriptive lists.  We have been re-visiting expanded noun phrases and investigating why the author uses adverbs to show certainty.  We have listened to a composition by Hans Zimmer and drawn our responses.  In art, we have reflected on the art and craft work of Anne Loveless.
